The talks were held in Doha on the sidelines of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Extraordinary Ministerial Meeting on February 21 and the 6th GECF Summit on February 22.

We had a productive meeting with Javad Owji, Minister of Oil of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to whom we reiterated Venezuela's commitment to bilateral association in multiple areas, and its importance to continue defending our strategic interests, the Venezuelan foreign minister wrote in a Twitter post.
Reportedly, Iran is among world’s biggest oil producers.
The country is also among the founders of the GECF and was secretary general of the organization for two periods.
Iran, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela are the 11 members of the GECF while Malaysia, Norway, Iraq, Peru, Azerbaijan, and the United Arab Emirates are observers.
Having a strong position in the global energy markets, the GECF member countries together represent 44 percent of the world gas production, 67 percent of the world proven natural gas reserves, 64 percent of transfer of gas through pipeline and 66 percent of LNG exports.
